Her parents were both born in Puerto Rico and moved to the St. Louis region to build a better life. Her family is a testament to the American Dream, and she is proud to be a child of that dream. She learned the power of difference and advocacy at an early age when her late brother, Marcus, was a student at Missouri School for the Blind.&nbsp;Daniela also brings her strategic communications experience to the Board in service of the city. Before being elected, she worked with a diverse range of institutions, spanning from grassroots and community organizations to community-based coalitions to top global companies and national nonprofits. Daniela previously served as the director of communications for the ACLU of Missouri, staff consultant for the Ferguson Commission, and worked as a journalist. Daniela is a graduate of the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism and has served on the boards of nonprofit organizations including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis, Pro-Choice Missouri, and St. Louis Public Radio. She is also a member of the Regional Business Council’s Leadership 100.

Pronouns: she/herWith a background in political campaigns and public relations, Bree brings a depth of knowledge about advocacy, communications, and politics at the local, state and federal level.&nbsp;Recently, she served as the campaign manager for Ald. Velázquez's successful election. Her work at the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri included outreach to underrepresented communities. At St. Louis University's School of Medicine, she worked in media relations and served as the staff liaison for the Board of Trustees.&nbsp;Bree has one son, Brett, who is a student at Southeast Missouri State University. She enjoys reading, baking, dining at St. Louis' amazing restaurants, and spending time with her two wild cats, a fluffy doodle, and family.&nbsp;

<h2>Understanding the role of an alderperson</h2>An alderperson, also known as a city councilperson in some regions, holds a pivotal position within local government, embodying the voice and will of the residents within their district. This role is not just a title; it's a commitment to public service, where the alderperson actively shapes their community's future through various responsibilities and duties.In St. Louis, voters elect 14 representatives to the city's legislative body, the Board of Aldermen. The Board creates, passes, and amends local laws, as well as approves the City's budget every year. The office of an alderperson works with other parts of the local government, including the mayor's office, the city's executive branch. Additionally, an alderperson collaborates with other government representatives, such as the state of Missouri and U.S. Congress, as necessary.Impact on the Community:Through their decisions and actions, an alderperson influences almost every aspect of their constituents' lives, from the safety of their neighborhoods to the quality of the local economy and parks. Their leadership can drive positive change, foster community engagement, and ensure that the city's growth and development reflect the needs and desires of its residents.An alderperson's responsibilities are vital for their community's effective governance and well-being. The service request helps us keep track of the ticket as it moves through the process.

<h2>What is Ward Capital?</h2>Each alderperson receives more than $700,000 each fiscal year in Ward Capital funds to update infrastructure in the ward. These funds typically covers projects such as installing speed bumps, fixing sidewalks, paving roads, and planting trees.Ward Capital cannot be spent on things like hiring additional city staff, additional programs or non-infrastructural city work.Ward Capital comes from a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/government/city-laws/ordinances/ordinance.cfm?ord=65863">one-half cent sales tax</a> approved by the City of St. Louis voters in 1993. Currently, the ward capital upgrades are managed by the Planning and Programming Division.
